T. Ray and I lived just outside Sylvan, South Carolina, population 3,100. Peach stands and Baptist churches, that sums it up.
At the entrance to the farm we had a big wooden sign with OWENS PEACH ENTERPRISES painted across it in the worst orange color you've ever seen. I hated that sign. But the sign was nothing compared with the giant peach perched atop a sixty-foot pole beside the gate. Everyone at school referred to it as the Great Fanny, and I'm cleaning up the language. Its fleshy color, not to mention the crease down the middle, gave it the unmistakable appearance oa a rear end. Rosaleen said it was T. Ray's way of mooning the entire world. That was T. Ray.

Liz's Teaser Tuesday
"You may not see it now," said the Princess of Pure Reason, looking knowingly at Milo's puzzled face, "but whatever we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone else, if even in the tiniest way. Why, when a housefly flaps his wings, a breeze goes round the world; when a speck of dust falls to the ground, the entire planet weighs a little more; and when you stamp your foot, the earth moves slightly off its course. Whenever you laugh, gladness spreads like the ripples in the pond; and whenever you're sad, no one anywhere can be really happy. And it's much the same thing with knowledge, for whenever you learn something new, the whole world becomes that much richer."

Alecia's teaser
"Do you think you and your sister--smart and clever as you think you are with your Shanghai city ways--will know where to go tonight with that baby girl? Will you know where to go tomorrow? The blood of your father has ruined you both. This is why I can buy you for such a low price, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to lose my goods so easily."
May looks at me. I'm the older sister. I'm supposed to know what to do, but I'm completely confused by what we're seeing and experiencing. Not once has anyone asked why we didn't meet the Louies in Hong Kong, what we've been through, how we survived or how we got to America. We let the old man take our jewelry and it feels as if we've been caught in a fisherman's net.

Debby's Tuesday Teaser
Sometimes circumstances in our lives keep trying to distract us from being happy and at peace in the moment. Sometimes it feels hypocritical to even think we could find happiness when there is so much sorrow surrounding us. If that's true for you right now, please believe me when I tell you that you can find the faith that says: I don't understand, and I don't know how long this is going to last - this situation may seem permanent, but how I experience this moment is not permanent, as long as my language of joy tells me the truth about what's going on. I can still be happy.

Liz's Teaser Tuesday
"Do you ever feel that way?"
"Lonely?"
I search for the words. "Restless. As if you haven't really met yourself yet. As is you'd passed yourself once in the fog, and your heart leapt - 'Ah! There I Am! I've been missing that piece!' But it happens too fast, and then that part of you disappears into the fog again. And you spend the rest of your days looking for it."
He nods, and I think he's appeasing me. I feel stupid of having said it. It's sentimental and true, and I've revealed a part of myself I shouldn't have.
"Do you know what I think?" Kartik says at last.
"What?"
"Sometimes, I think you can glimpse it in another."

Daemon had written: "What do you do when she asks a question no man would give a child an answer to?"
Saetan had replied: "Hope you're obliging enough to answer it for me. However, if you're backed into a corner, refer her to me. I've become accustomed to being shocked."

Debby's Tuesday Teaser
Six inches of snow fell the last week of school before Christmas break. Doris had learned over the years that there was no point in expecting her students to concentrate on anything when the holidays loomed tantalizingly near. As red- and green-frosted cupcakes were passed out, Doris asked the students to stand and each read their story of their favorite Christmas memory.

Cecilia's Tuesday Teaser
Dill stopped and let Jem go ahead. When Jem put his foot on the bottom step, the step squeaked. He stood still, then tried his weight by degrees. The step was silent. Jem skipped two steps, put his foot on the porch, heaved himself to it. and teetered a long moment. He regained his balance and dropped to his knees. He crawled to the window, raised his head and looked in.
Then I saw the shadow. It was the shadow of a man with a hat on. at first I thought it was a tree, but there was no wind blowing, and tree-trunks never walked. The back porch was bathed in moonlight, and the shadow, crisp as toast, moved across the porch toward Jem.
Dill saw it next. He put his hands to his face. When it crossed Jem, Jem saw it. He put his arms over his head and went rigid.
The shadow stopped about a foot beyond Jem. Its arm came out from its side, dropped, and was still. Then it turned and moved back across Jem, walked along the porch and off the side of the house, returning as it had come.
Jem leaped off the porch and galloped toward us. He flung open the gate, danced Dill and me through, and shooed us between two rows of swishing collards. Halfway through the collards I tripped; as I tripped the roar of a shotgun shattered the neighborhood.
I don't know the real page as this is on my reader pg 54.

Our New Read
Our newest read is The Host by Stephenie Meyer. Here is a little teaser summary of what it is about.
A species of altruistic parasites have peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially the feisty Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him.
It is a really good story with the the first love-triangle involving just two bodies. I enjoyed it and hope you all will too. I can't wait to bury my nose in it again. Just a reminder as well, we won't be meeting to discuss this book until Jan. 18th so you have a while to read it. Enjoy!

Okay, so I think instead of doing Teaser Tuesday on the first Tuesday of every month we should just do it whatever Tuesday we feel like. That way we can have something new floating around on different weeks. So, feel free to post whenever and however many times you wish.

Our New Read
The book we will be reading this month is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
The charming tale of Santiago, a shepherd boy, who dreams of seeing the world,He journeys from Spain to Morocco in search of worldly success, and eventually to Egypt, where a fateful encounter with an alchemist brings him at last to self-understanding and spiritual enlightenment. The story has the comic charm, dramatic tension and psychological intensity of a fairy tale, but it's full of specific wisdom as well, about becoming self-empowered, overcoming depression, and believing in dreams.
We will be meeting at Alecia Darrow's house on THURSDAY the 11th at 7pm. We changed the day because Alecia has a meeting on the regularly scheduled time. Hope you all enjoy the book!

Debby's Teaser Tuesday
Dawn is just breaking as I retrieve a set of bow and arrows and begin to force a path through the drifted snow in the woods. I'm determined, for some reason, to get to the lake. Maybe to say goodbye to the place, to my father and the happy times we spent there, because I know I'll probably never return. Maybe just so I can draw a complete breath again. Part of me doesn't really care if they catch me, if I can see it one more time.

Liz's Teaser Tuesday
Lara knew her fate. She didn't have to be in the other room where the discussion of such was taking place; she already knew what would happen, and no amount of arguing would change the outcome.
She sat quietly, patiently, on her small bed. It wouldn't do any good to fret over her situation; it was too late for that. She looked out her window and watched the clouds drift lazily by, unbothered by any worries or woes. She wished she were a cloud.

All four Gospels, despite their differences, present us with the same picture of Jesus as one who not only showed concern for the well-being of women but also acknowledged their true worth and took note of their ideas and opinions whether he accepted or rejected those ideas.
The stories found in the Gospels demonstrate an equal concern for women and men. both in need of forgiveness. Like men, women needed to hear his message of change, and Jesus expected them both to respond to his call. The Gospel writers preserved these stories and prensented them to a Greco-Roman world that often found them offensive.

Mrs. Mike
This month Cecilia picked our new book; we will be reading Mrs. Mike by Benedict and Nancy Freedman. Here is a brief description of what the book is about:
Mrs. Mike...is the story of the start of young love, its growth to maturity, and its acceptance of a dangerous, hard, but enthralling life. A moving love story set in the Canadian wilderness, Mrs. Mike is a classic tale that has enchanted millions of readers worldwide. It brings the fierce, stunning landscape of the Great North to life-and tenderly evokes the love that blossoms between Sergeant Mike Flannigan and beautiful young Katherine Mary O'Fallon.
So check your local library, borrow it from a friend who has it, or, if you're wanting to build up a library collection of your own, purchase it. Have fun reading!

Debby's Tuesday Teaser
"Ignore them and they'll stop bothering you, " my mom and the counselor said. So that's what I tried to do. Everytime Dara, Kat, or any of their friends abused me, instead of fighting back and sticking up for my rights, I responded with a verbal comeback, or I acted as if they weren't there. The more I showed how "mature" I could be, the more determined they were to get my goat. What had started out as a simple payback for being a tattle tale had mutated into something far more serious.
Liz's Teaser Tuesday
But forgiveness...I'll hold on to that fragile slice of hope and keep it close, remembering that in each of us lie good and bad, light and dark, art and pain, choice and regret, cruelty and sacrifice. We're each of us our own chiaroscuro, our own bit of illusion fighting to emerge into something solid, something real. We've got to forgive ourselves that. I must remember to forgive myself. Because there's an awful lot of gray to work with. No one can live in the light all the time.

It was possible in the camp, as men died, to come into possession of objects of some value--shirt, shorts, knives, and occasionally, watches. The Thais would pay gladly for them in their paper money known as "bahts." A baht was worth about twenty-one cents. Or they would barter for the goods, offering medicines or duck eggs.

Cecilia's Teaser
Later that summer of 1967 we were split up again and Jim and I were put in another building, still together in a cell. In the last part of July and the first part of August we went through another torture session. then our captors moved us to the workers' quarters right next to the power plant. They did this in the hope that is would persuade the U. S. not to bomb it. It was bombed, however. This is the time when I thought I might be injured. When the bombs fell the window shutters were closed, the doors were barred and the overpressure in the room was so great that the window and the door were blown off the building. A sagging string that ran from one end of the room to the other snapped when the walls buckled.

The Hunger Games
This month we will be reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (and look, I made the blog match the book cover, sort of). Trudy Bainter picked it out for us and I am really excited about it. I've been wanting to read this, my sister-in-law, who also has a book club in her ward, always suggests good reads to me and this was one of them.
Here is a little teaser intro for what the book is about.
In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.
Sound interesting? Well, pick up a copy at the local library, or see if someone might already have it and borrow it from them. Enjoy!
P.S. I heard there are plans to make this book into a movie! Also, Alecia and I would like to know how book club went last night since we both weren't able to make it. So we may corner someone. :)

Shelly's Teaser (Wed.)
(My computer wasn't working yesterday.)
"She knew Maël would be looking for her; she just hoped he'd be able to find her. Elric had made a mistake in taking her, because he'd unleased her husband's formidable wrath and he would hunt the King down until he found him. the wrath of an immortal was something no one in their right mind would want to witness and Elric would not only have the pleasure of experiencing it first-hand, but it would also be the death of him."

Amy's Teaser on Tuesday
Because the odd thing was, I didn't think I was particularly crazy, or that what I often thought or felt was unique to me. Instead, I had come to believe that everyone had these thoughts or feelings, this sense of force or evil energy pushing on them to do evil or be destructive. The difference was, they all knew how to manage it, how to hide it, how to control it, because that was the socially appropriate thing to do. They had stronger wills, and better coping skills, than I did. They knew how to keep their demons in check; I did not. But perhaps I could learn.

Coming Up...
I wanted to prepare you all for what's coming up. Every first Tuesday of the month we are going to do a Teaser Tuesday. The rule is you open up a book you are currently reading (that is not our book of the month) or a book you have already read, to a random page and post a couple of sentences or small paragraph on the blog with the title and author name and page number as well. What this will hopefully do is get each other interested in different books. I am totally borrowing this idea from another book group blog, so all the praise goes to http://exclusivebooks.blogspot.com I am loving her blog and may use some of her other ideas. She also finds discussion questions from book review sites and posts them as well. Another good idea! Here is an example of Teaser Tuesday that I found on her blog:
Since there are several of us as authors on this blog you can put your name in the title of your post, for example, "Liz's Teaser Tuesday" though at the bottom of your post it does say who posted it, but if you want to make it absolutely clear and easier for others to figure out then go for it. :)
Also, I want everyone to visit the above mentioned blog, she has really good ideas, and since I am new at this I am using her blog as a template. You can all post things on here whenever. Like if you have a book recommendation or want to do a review on something you read, and posting a picture of said book is always helpful. Just do a Google image search.
Feel free to also post comments or questions about the book we are currently reading. I want us all to have an active part in this. This is a way to help draw us closer together as sisters while sharing our love of books, and it's such a fun way of doing so. :)
TEASER TUESDAYS asks you to:
Grab your current read.
Let the book fall open to a random page.
Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
Please avoid spoilers

Anne of Green Gables
Welcome to Slightly Bookish! Our book for this month will be Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. We will be meeting at Debby Mitchell's house on August 17th @ 7pm So mark the date on your calendar, and check the book out from the library, borrow from a friend, or buy the book if you think it will be one you'll want for your own library.
I absolutely adore the movie, and, I know it is shocking (with me being a bookworm and all) but I have never read this book! I know, I know, hard to believe. That is why I am so excited about reading it. And if you are wondering about my choice of background theme and text color for the blog at the moment, well, I have the green for Green Gables, the ivy adds a nice touch of nature, and the orange is due to Gilbert's term of endearment for Anne; carrots! Gotta love that one.
Anyway, I will be changing the background each month to try and match it with the theme of the book we will be reading. Pretty awesome, huh? I thought it would be fun and that way you won't be looking at the same old boring background. And you'll never know what I'll have in store for you. :)
So, get a copy of the book if you can and get to reading! :)
